Hello all! I found this Edison Gem model B on Facebook market for next to nothing, and OH BOY does she need some work! The mandrel pulley needs to be replaced and who knows what the motor looks like! For some reason it has a Model H reproducer and it’s stuck, I can’t take it out of the tone arm. I paid very little for this machine so if it needs to be a display only piece, so be it. I’m still glad I grabbed it!

If there is anyone who can service it and restore the reproducer I’d love the referral.

I love me a good project! (even if it involves me stressing about something simple for 7 pages in a thread lol) I wonder if it came with 2/4 minute gearing, And that’s why it has a model H? How is it stuck in the carriage? Did the screw head break off or did someone epoxy it to the carriage?

I’m surprised they were making these Gem pulleys out of that evil pot metal!

I’m still without a Gem or a Fireside machine in my own collection (maybe in 2023?) but once I get my B-19 finally running properly, I’m going to take a break and shoot some more 8&16mm film footage.

Most of the green colored H reproducers are the dreaded pot metal version.

As I had mentioned on Facebook regarding this thread, the pictures show that the model H reproducer here has a 2 minute stylus bar and stylus. Someone in the past likely found the 4 minute model H reproducer and replaced the original 4 minute stylus bar and stylus with those from a model C reproducer.

Any pot metal Edison cylinder phonograph reproducer can be successfully removed by first removing the carriage from the upper works and then applying some penetrating oil around the outside edge of the underside of the reproducer where it contacts the carriage. Let that set for a while and with the carriage set screw removed or well loosened get your smallest flat ended punch and a small hammer and gently tap at different spots around the underside edge of the reproducer. You will see the reproducer begin to be removed a little at a time. Tap on the opposite sides of the area where you see it being removed and eventually the reproducer will pop out. Voila. Done.

The reproducer's pot metal edge where it seats inside the carriage eye can be carefully filed down so that it fits easily inside the carriage eye by yourself with a slim file or with a lathe or whatever after the reproducer inside parts are removed. Rebuild the reproducer yourself and save some money. There are videos on YouTube to help. It's not difficult. Good luck.

I’m sending 2 of mine to Steve Medved hopefully soon for new Diamond styli.

I haven't been here that long, how is his reputation, I like Wyatt's innovation with the Exhibition reproducer ?

All his photo's are gone, but you may get enough of an idea from mine.
