I am in a remote location dealing with a family medical emergency. It has been two months or so of hell.

I have come across a blue HMV 102 in a shop here. It seems to be in E/Mint cosmetic condition. It is reported to be in excellent working order. At present its serial number is unknown to me.

What would be a fair North American price range for such a machine? There is no market for the machine here at all. Any sale by the vendor would have to be web-based.

I would like to put in an offer, and I would like it to be a fair offer.

Thanks. Things I can find for completed UK auctions fall roughly into the same price and up to plus 20% more or so. The non-black coloured ones, green, red, and blue, seem to fetch a bit more or at least have higher asking prices.

Blue green and red are the most commonly found coloured 102's, but still command a price premium over black.
Brown grey and red leather sold in lower numbers and were soon discontinued, so are rarer and more expensive.

An early 102 will have two pegs on the motor board (pictured) to restrain the detachable record tray. If there are pegs but no tray, the gramophone will be devalued. Later 102's with no pegs may or may not have had the tray as original equipment. The tray is believed to have been discontinued as a WW2 economy measure and was never reintroduced post war.

Negotiations have failed.

The seller's expectations were too high. He was asking $500 CDN, about $390 US. I offered him $200 CDN about $155 US.

The machine's condition was not as described. It was missing feet, and the handle was coming apart. There were also scuffs on the outside that had not been visible in the display case. Mechanically it was flawless, playing absolutely silently, no motor noise at all. Inside under the hood it was very clean. It was nice enough but not $500 CDN nice.

It was, I assume from information here, a pre-WWII build as it had the pegs for the record holder, but no holder.

I offered a top up of some other antique gear, which would have brought the value up past his asking price, but no go. I may try again before I leave town. Oh well ....
