The Talking Machine Forum — For All Antique Phonographs & Recordings

Can someone give me some information about this machine? I think Edison only produced them for about 6 months in 1914. I would appreciate any information you could tell me about it and how desirable it is on the market. Thanks! John

I like pretty much everything Amberola-- But the VIII and the X (DX) are my favorites-- The size of both is similar to the 30, but the dome top on both is much nicer looking, in my opinion. As far as I know, after the 1914 factory fire, the VIII and the X (and others) were no longer made- That's when the 30, 50, 75 line started up.
The DX used essentially a Fireside mechanism and used the sliding tube horn-to-reproducer connection. The Diamond B reproducer gives good volume and is (in my opinion) superior to the Diamond "C" found on the 30, 50 and 75. I have also seen them outfitted with an "N" reproducer with sapphire so it could play wax amberols. Never have done that myself, so I don't know how well that works for record wear. Nice little machines.
Value? Probably not much different than a similar 30.
