Besides the obvious construction of these 2 Edison DD reproducers are they interchangeable with other DD machines? Why the difference? Thanks in advance, Bill

The standard DD reproducer had several minor changes along the way. Frow discusses this a bit in his DD book. There's more info on the board.
All Edison reproducers are fully interchangeable, except the long play reproducer, which is only for long play records. (Conversely, long play records must only be played with the long play reproducer. Playing an LP record with a regular DD reproducr will destroy the very fine grooves instantly.)

The one on the left is an example of the earliest version of Reproducer put into production. The flange with the stylus bar mounted to the floating weight was eliminated to simplify and reduce production costs.
As 52089 wrote, all versions are interchangeable as they were "backwards compatible". Generally speaking, the later the production, the more improved they were.
