Victrola Speed Indicator Crud

Hello All:
So many Victrolas I've come across have really dirty or rusty spots inside: the speed indicator assembly and faceplate, the pointer with rust, the white label with rust or lots of dirt, etc.
How in blazes do these get so messed up? Everything's covered and the speed control knob wouldn't typically be adjusted very often.
Below is my current example off a two-door Credenza X, serial number 1590. Not pictured is the transparent yellowed celluloid that covered the indicator window.
Your thoughts are welcome! Thanks!
Bob

Bob,
I've seen these also. Although most in my collection are in fairly good condition. I have only purchased one or 2 that were rough and rusty like that, including a motorboard that had been separated from a machine and stored who knows where before I picked it up cheap. I assumed that it had experienced storage in a damp and dirty environment.

Thanks AZ!
I received a couple PMs from members, one saying that it is mold, and another suggesting that there may also be insect residue involved.
I think any machines stored in a very damp environment would more likely show the signs I've mentioned.
Thanks to you and the other members!

Bob,
I also have noticed this and wondered why. Do you know of any alternative to the celluloid window? I have worked on so many where it is so yellowed with age that you can't see through it. I wonder if cutting out a piece of a plastic bottle would work. I have also had a hard time to get the indicator shafts freed up so they work with the small return spring. I had an indicator one time that the arrow arm would not come off the shaft. I removed the little nut and washer and tried to pry it up without any luck.

Glad you asked, Ken!
I posted this fix a long time ago:

The images are gone, but the info content is still good. And easy!
Have a good weekend.

I guess I was having a "Senior" moment. I didn't recall my response to your post from 5 years ago. Still a good idea.
