I’ve seen two different varieties of HMV 101, in terms of where the crank is stored. One variety has them mounted to clips on the tone arm board, The the other variety has the winding crank stored in a clip in the lid, the same as the 102 models. Which one of these came first? And roughly when did they switch?

Did these changes correspond with different motors?


I’ve seen the 410 motor listed as being in the earliest machines, then the number 59, and finally an unmarked motor, which I’m guessing is the same as the ones in the post merger Columbia 202a.

Any information on this would be appreciated!

The early front-wing machines used the 425 motor. From mid 1927, the side wind machine was introduced, using the 410 motor. This in turn was replaced by the 59 motor in 1928. The 270 motor was introduced in 1931, and was primarily designed for the 102. The winding handle appears to have moved from the motorboard to the lid when the automatic brake was introduced, which left no room on the motorboard for the storage of the handle. I don’t know how I missed the correlation to the auto brake… when did they get introduced?

The autobrake came in with 101L, in 1930.
