I spotted this today:

So one version sold for 8 dollars in 1905. According to one website that is 2,709 dollars 'in todays money'. Just for the horn. Some rich people around I guess.

Papier Mache consists of pulped paper, sometimes reinforced with textiles, and bound with an adhesive such as wallpaper paste.
The Victor horn does not correspond to this recipe. The advertisement pictured states that it is made from fibre, paper and wood.
HMV offered a similar compressed fibre horn as an optional extra. It was made from a composition known as Flaxite.
The HMV horn is seldom seen, but Flaxite was widely used in the manufacture of cheap suitcases.

I bought a fancy cased Victor D with one of these horns. I believe it came through time together. I love it and have always wondered if that horn inspired Victor to make wood horns. The decal says "Victor Distributing and Export Co. New York." The decal implies it's a Victor product but I have doubts. Could this company be a large Victor jobber and used the Victor trademark scene with Victor's approval? So many questions!

You're exactly right, Jerry. This was a Victor Jobber; not the VTMCo.

That little advertisement provides so much information about that horn.
You can search for other ads by this clever jobber and get a feel for them.

Thanks for posting that link, since it goes farther back than the inflation calculator I normally use.

I was a little puzzled by that, and double-checked the site. I noticed, instead of $8.00, you had entered $80.00: $8.00 (1905 USD) would be $270.92, which would be more in line with what I'd expect for the times--still expensive though.
