Grill Cloth on Diamond Disc Machines?

I just got a nice Edison A-250. Did these machines originally come with grill cloth? Mine has none. Also I was wondering if there is a way to tell which Diamond Disc models originally came with grill cloth, and which did not.

The A-250 should have a wood grained horn, therefore no grill cloth. The B-250 and C-250 had grill cloth.

That is correct, the A series should have a wood grained horn. No grill clothe necessary.

Makes sense but the A series did have grill cloth, even though it does seem a bit unnecessary given the the wood grained horn. They may have not all had grill cloth but many certainly did. I've also seen Amberolas III and 1B on rare occaision with grill cloth, seemingly even more unnecessary. Here is A-250 no. 12887 with original grill cloth.

Anyway if you've got a nice A-250 with no grill cloth, I certainly would not put one in.

Yes. I just took delivery on an A-250 and it has a grill cloth on it that is the same gold color as in the picture. I don't believe it's original but it looks good. I'm debating on whether to keep it or not but thanks for the info, everyone!

My Oak A250 was stained with a dark red color which is the same under the lid. I opted for a red grill cloth which also hides the chipped paint behind it. The motor and the cabinet have matching serial numbers, but I suppose they too could have been swapped out, but the horn looks more like a mahogany faux grain. The light oak faux grain would not have looked right with the dark red stain so it may have been installed from the factory. I have not installed by mute ball yet, but I will soon. ;)

Interesing. Is your bedplate maroon or chocolate brown? What is the serial no?

Here is the link to what I posted when I bought it. All the pictures are gone, but the bed plate is chocolate.

My A-450 does not have a grill cloth or a mute ball and I cannot find any evidence of it ever having those. But some do have the cloth on them.

I have an A-200 restored about 20 years ago by a deceased New England collector. Other than using VW Rabbit maroon red on the horn, presumably because the woodgrain flaked, he replaced the grill cloth -- there were bits of old grill cloth on there.
Glad it is correct because it looks nice with the fabric over the grill.
