This Edison "H" reproducer came with a machine that I picked up today. I have never seen anything like this and was hoping that someone could shed some light on it.

As you can see, the only printing on the body of the reproducer is a serial number and even that it is not in it's normal position. I have photographed a normally found Model H along with this newly acquired one to use for comparison.

The printing on the weight are identical but when you flip it over the hole that the stylus bar link comes through is oval shape and the stylus bar is make differently using a heavier bar.

In my experience, these were very late tops. Or earlier tops for dictaphone reproducers repurposed with a longer neck for entertainment use. Perhaps some were from a factory repaired reproducer. Even in the late 20’s, I’m sure some of those pot metal tops had started to give some people problems (the few people still using H’s in the 1920’s!). One of my modified H reproducers for the ICS attachment for an Amberola 30 had a top like yours. Hope Steve Medved will chime in here!

Steve Medved did a writeup a few years ago in the magazine about this very topic, but I can’t put my hands on it at the moment.

If I recall, the brass C series bodies replaced the pot metal B series (and late A series?) around 1924. So, these are late-issue replacement parts.

Thanks for all the input & replies Something that has not been addressed is the different configuration and size of the hole in the bottom of the tail weight where the link passes through. Even the appearance of the stylus bar seems to be different from your normal everyday stylus bar.

Yes - it's in an issue of the APS magazine. Steve did a nice series on all the Edison reproducers.

Can any forum members direct me to the APS issue containing Steve Medved article on Edison cylinder reproducers. I have tons of magazines but I'm striking out. Also tried to do a search on the APS site and still striking out. Sucks getting old..

I clicked on "Member Resources," then clicked on "Library" on the drop-down menu. Then I typed in "Medved" as my key word. a long list of matches came up. I knew the articles were in the APS magazine, so I looked at everything marked "TAP" (The Antique Phonograph) from 2014 on.
