Interesting - I can't quite read the plaque stating who sold it originally though.

The escutcheon looks like a replacement maybe ?

Maybe an India Teak model ?

It is different from mine and other teak 101's I have seen, their lids are framed while this has a flat lid. The seller claims it has a double spring, but the case is not deep enough for the double spring nr 32 motor that fitted the dual spring version of the 101.

Also the teak 101 does not have the external needle container. The seller claims it has a double spring, but the case does no look not deep enough for the double spring nr 32 motor that fitted the dual spring version of the 101. It could be genuine, these machines made for India are known for mixing up components from different periods.

Very interesting indeed.

Now I think about it, didn't Steve once mention something about a rare India Teak side-wind 101 ? Maybe I am imagining it - but I seem to recall that he did ?

I believe both side and front wind versions have the same cases (framed lid and bottom, no needle container), but Steve may confirm it. Mine is a front wind.

An internet search found a couple of side wound teak 101's. One image shows a needle drawer (and a non-original soundbox).
HMV regularly offloaded obsolete machines and components to the outposts of the British Empire, which probably explains why the early front wind teak 101 is more common than the later side wound version.

Yes, I did. I have two teak 101s, the first is the more often seen panelled lid version with front wind but the other is a side wind with solid lid.

No, they don't actually, Carlos. The side wind version appears to have had a solid lid and bottom.

I have no idea why the escutcheon is inside out though!

Aha ! Brilliant, thanks as always Steve.
