Columbia AJ top wind motor - spring question

Does anyone know how a Columbia spring attaches to the back of the spring barrel
in a Columbia AJ top wind motor? It looks like it would be similar to the early
cylinder or BY spring that has a bent slotted end. The problem is that the
inside of the arbor on the top wind is the traditional pegged arbor.

A photo of the spring barrel would be helpful. The issue is the 1" gap at the
outside of the barrel.

thanks for any info on this.

Harry the outer end of the main springs on the earliest top wind AJ's were connected to the post of the motor frame. Similar to a Standard X or Edison Gem main spring.
The opening in the spring barrel is for the outer end of the spring to pass through.
Some early AJ's did not use a spring barrel and had open springs.

Thanks Larry
I thought that might be the type of spring needed.
If you come across a base, let me know.
