We often complain when inexperienced sellers place the soundbox on the wrong side of the turntable.
This period advertisement shows that even the original retailers did not always get it right.

The soundbox seems a LIMIT, isn't it?

I get your point but I believe that the gramophone was pictured that way just in order to better show which kind of soundbox it was equipped with.

As a side comment, I am very often annoyed by how the soundbox commonly faces the opposite way from the listening point. Some of them are very nice to look at, but you stare at the boring and uninspiring back of the soundbox most of the time.
