Nothing wrong with that. Who's passed away recently from up that way? That hasn't been lying around in some hermit's shed for the past 80 years, that's come from a collector. Someone in this forum will know who probably.

A tropical jointed 10B, no less.

Beware the eyewatering 36% buyer's fees, then consider the seller who pays another 13% (10% + VAT + 1% Insurance) so that the auctioneers cream off almost half the hammer price. Nice work if you can get it.

It is very sad to see this superb instrument for sale which belongs to Ian Maxted---the extremely knowledgeable former gramophone and antiques dealer and contributor to this forum. Ian is now in a home which means he has to fund enormous care costs thus many of his treasures are up for sale. This example represents the finest on the planet and is in near perfect condition. The "Export" model Oversize is incredibly rare. The horn was manufactured in two parts to greatly reduce shipping costs. The base unit was once owned by the Sackville-Wests. Many of us have spent huge amounts of time listening to the world's best traditional jazz coming from the mouth of this famous horn and indeed it is this horn I copied to make the new ones twenty years ago.

Thank you very much, Graham, for confirming the provenance of the machine. I knew someone here would recognise it. I'm so sorry to learn about poor Ian. I wondered how he was doing these days as I haven't spoken to him for many years.

It's a travesty for Ian that his life has gone this way but surely if money raising is the objective, would it not be better to sell this privately? As Roger has correctly pointed out the auctioneers will take 50% of the proceeds for doing very little.

I'm sure there are many of us who know Ian who would consider buying it.

Would anyone be interested in my Expert Senior pedestal model as I might consider selling it if i bought Ian's 10B as I don't really have room for two giants? I would consider Ian's machine in preference to the fabulous Expert I bought from Frank, purely because it has the Oversize horn and I can easily accommodate it now (wide double doors for access).

Many thanks for your comments Steve and I quite agree that this should have been offered privately---greatly to Ian's benefit. However, our EMG group was not contacted and the first I knew about it was when I saw the auction particulars. I imagine it is now too late to change the destiny as it would seem already to be in Yorkshire---almost certainly under contract ? Potential buyers should be aware that there is an excellent condition spare motor which goes with this machine---the hyper-rare Collaro M3A.

Thanks again, Graham, for explaining the situation. I was curious about the Yorkshire location too as I know Ian lived in Kingston-upon-Thames. I know Ian has at least one daughter, sorry, I can't recall her name now as I only met her once 30 years ago when I met both of them at Prescot Hill Climb to collect a machine from Ian. I remember she had an Austin Seven she was telling me all about. This reminds me to ask about Ian's Bugatti. What happened to that, does anyone know?

Are you in contact with Ian or his children? It's never too late to withdraw a machine from auction. I've known it to happen on the day of the sale. The more I think about the situation, the sadder it all becomes.

If anyone is in touch with Ian please send him my good wishes. I hope he's doing okay.

It looks like a Mark 9 "horseshoe" shape soundbox to me. Knowing how Ian favoured this soundbox over all others for playing jazz records, it wouldn't surprise me if that happened to be the one found on the machine when the auctioneers have taken it. That begs the question where is the 4 spring original? I hope its not lost somewhere amongst other items being sold.
