It is in lovely condition (the replacement turntable felt in the wrong colour spoils it) but 157s are never good sellers as they are not really re-entrant machines, and are rather plain in appearance. I've been trying to sell my oak version for £80 for ages, but no luck so far!

Replacement felt? It looks original to me and it's the right colour. However, the door handles look wrong to me! :D

The turntable felt even has the usual scratch where someone has tried to put on a 10 inch record and missed the start.
The door handles look original to me, although they are badly faded and need refinishing.
These question are, however, academic as the machine has been withdrawn from eBay "because there was an error in the listing".

The "error" being that it wasn't photographed perched atop the brick wall.

I must admit that I was tempted to buy this as I have room for maybe just one more floor standing gramophone - but it just wasn't quite what I am looking for. (I am actually not sure exactly what I am looking for - but will know when I see it !).

I remember an eBay seller some years ago saying that the scored ring on the turntable was put there "so you know where to put a 10 inch record"!! :D :D :D

I bought a mahogany hmv163 with some trouble, which I could easily fix, from this seller: Mr. Feek. It was about GBP 350.00. This is a reasonable price. He helped me shipping it to the US. hmv163 is an amazing model. The volume of the sound coming from this model can easily compete with hmv202 or 203.

Mmmm... except for the bass.
clearly the 5a/b soundbox is a great improvement over the former no4/no.2 soundboxes, the final result of each model was the size of the folded horn

Very true but its also the refinement of the mid-range. Vocals sound so much better and more realistic / natural through the bigger horns. The 163 is a very good machine but it's nowhere near a 202/3 (or the 19 series). Not surprisingly the reproduction improves with the increase in size of the horn.
