HMV were known to offload obsolete parts onto their overseas factories, especially Calcutta, which probably explains why the early front wind Teak 101 is more often found than this later side wound example. It has condition issues, but could be a worthwhile restoration project at the right price.

Intriguing; I've had a teak 101 just like this (side wind, and flush ('clamped') rather than panelled lid) for years, and I never realised it was 'rare'! I suppose it wasn't just that London offloaded obsolete parts overseas, but also that Calcutta may have had a stock of front-wind machines, or motors for them, to use up for longer than London did.

There are certainly more front-wound teak 101's than side wound ones, but that's not to say the front-winding version is exactly common! I'm very surprised you didn't think it was rare though given that presumably you weren't tripping over side wound teak cased 101's wherever you went? There was a low key online debate about this over 10 years ago (sadly, long erased) when one turned up and some people claimed it had to be "fake" because "all teak 101's have the front wind and panelled lids" etc. It was stated so emphatically that those of us who are lucky enough to own any teak cased HMV's all went scuttling off to check our own machines!

I'm of the opinion that Hayes didn't need to send later parts to India for some time into the 101 production as they'd already dumped a surfeit of front wind motors onto Calcutta when they had introduced the improved 101 to the UK market. The production volume must have been a small fraction of the British market but by the time they did, the 101 had been discontinued and replaced by the 102 anyway. I could be wrong but it might explain why in complete contrast to say the British market, the side winding Calcutta 101 appears to be a rarity?
