Rare Bird Alert, Columbia DeLuxe, (second type, not the lion’s head)

Post by Django »

Facebook Marketplace, NY. Rare, two door DeLuxe for $40.00. It needs work, but it’s probably worth the work. I don’t believe that many of these machines exist.

I think that this is one of those cases where "rare" doesn't mean desirable... That cabinet is Columbia's equivalent to Edison's H-19...
Homely or ugly are the words that come to mind and probably why you don't find them. :?

"No one needs a Victrola XX, a Perfected Graphophone Type G, or whatever you call those noisy things."

I have a soft spot for the unusual and/or early Columbia Grafonolas..... If I could spare just enough room... and if this was close to me, I would probably jump on it. However, that opinion is based on my own unique taste, not "value".... However, I have pretty much thrown "value" out of the window given the types of phonographs I am drawn to.... :D

A Columbia with horn doors. Has to be an early machine.

Perfect example of rare doesn't equal valuable.

I’m not interested enough to get it, and it is too far away from me in any case, but it is clearly the plainest of the three versions of the De Luxe. By the time of the third generation (or variant of that) in my collection, the lid decal only says Columbia Grafonola and doesn’t indicate the model.
