Was the Victor B&B "L" size horn offered on any other phonograph besides the Auxetophone? Secondly, did it come with a super duper heavy duty elbow to support all of that weight floating out there at 36 inches? I ask these questions because I recently aquired a Victor V with an 36" "L".

I checked a few of the Victor catalogs and the "Victor Data Book" and agree it only shows up as an offer as the OEM on the Auxetophone (VDB mentions a "M" size horn which I do not think I have ever seen). But as we all know the "L" was an option for any Victor outside horn machine that was offered that could accept the small end. I would have hoped the dealer would have advised against mating it with a Victor II elbow! It was also priced at $15 option which was more than a wood horn back in the day, so it must be effective for concerts.

Regarding the elbow I have never heard of an OEM Victor product/elbow to take the size of the 23" horn. I have seen an elbow that had a blade/support soldered in along the bottom of the elbow to help resolve the potential for collapsing the elbow. That was on a fancy Victor D years ago. I believe your OEM elbow is safe to take the mass of the horn, however I would worry about anything that could fall on the top half of the horn pushing the bell down causing additional pressure on the elbow itself - that would be a bad day IMO.

I took a closer look at the elbow. Here's the Pic. Question is, "is it dealer original or is it previous owner alteration"

It doesn't matter who did the modification. Its not finished very well, but I understand why - it is in a tough spot to work on. I found the thread where someone had images of the Victor Fancy D with large horn, but the TMF site no longer supports past images - here is a rough drawing of the way the solution was done on that elbow. JD

I have one where some riveted a handle on it to carry and support it. Steve

The 36L on our Auxetophone has a standard elbow with no signs of sagging, but the horn is amazingly large and heavy, I would not put it on any tabletop machine, as a matter of fact I don't keep it on the Auxetophone for fear of damaging something, this is an older photo, although I still have the 36L for originality's sake, I keep a smaller horn on the machine for display. Thanks for the photo. I put a 24" flower on the V. Just as you said, the 36L is just too big for the machine, and I to am worried about a colapse due to the weight. Probably will hang the horn from the ceiling for display. Thanks to all for your comments and input.
