Just finished restoring this ex-Steve teak 101. Had quite a lot of damage to the case, awful smelling innards and generally this poor colonial model was in a desperate need of TLC. Tried to do a sympathetic restoration making it as presentable as possible without loosing all of the patina. Only period HMV parts were used, original varnish was gently polished. Originally this late colonnial mahogany tinted teak 101 came with gold lacquered nickel parts outside. Corner protectors were totally worn out and beyond saving. I gold lacquired the polished nickel parts to replicate factory finish. Brass needle container and crank ferrule were left in unpolished condition. Correct black leather handle was restitched. Missing woodwork was cannibalized from one of the motor mounts and was shaped to fit the damaged area. Platter, horn, rebuilt brass backed No.4 and shiny parts are from various 101’s. The motor board support blocks felt is from a 102 record tray. Now this is one of my favourite portables!

I always remember a quote from one of Arthur W.J.G. Ord-Hume's books on restoring mechanical music ( player pianos , organs , musical boxes etc )
He was referring to an item that may turn up in the most deplorable ,neglected or incomplete condition.
" Everything is restorable. It just depends how much time , skill and money you are able to put into it " In my opinion he is absolutely right !

A perfect restoration... From abused and neglected to old but well cared for.
