Hi all
I am currently working on what I believe is a HVM open horn model no.2.

My only reference is "HMV Gramophone s 1921 to 1936" which seems to confirm this. I think the turntable is from a later machine and the no.4 soundbox is obviously not original, otherwise it looks good to me. The only doubt I have is because the family claims to have a photo of the then family around this particular gramophone in 1913. I m pretty sure they have their dates wrong but just in case I m missing something, I d appreciate your input.

Other non-original features include the Columbia/Garrard turntable brake and the post-1920 pattern winding handle.
I will leave it to the serious HMV collectors to speculate as to the date of the machine.
I assume that there are no helpful design or assembly labels on the underside of the case.

Unfortunately no labels or anything like that I m afraid, the case was completely stripped when I got it, that would be too easy .
I m happy enough with the crank handle and brake as it looks like this type in the 1921 catalogue on their no.2, at least according to my reference book, could be wrong of course.

Mine is a single spring with the crank handle towards the front , slightly lower than the the button level. The attached picture is what I believe I have.

Yes, by the look of it I would say yours is almost certainly a number 2, in oak, with the single spring motor.

The No 2 was around in 1913, but that motor with the winder going straight in to the spring barrel (no gears) is generally post 1918 in my experience. Whatever its date, it would originally have had an Exhibition soundbox.
