Doug - I'll bet that is for a pin to keep the crank from falling out of the case. It'd be a nice feature for one who uses one of those machines a lot.

... or maybe it was in a museum setting to prevent people from stealing the crank. Reproducers and cranks, always an easy target in public displays. :(
