Can anything be done to help this finish?

Side of my VV-XIV is pictured. Can anything be done about the flaking shellac?

I’ve read about using denatured alcohol to fix crazing, but this seems beyond that.

You might try re-polishing the area using the "French Polish" method, which is actually not very complicated if you practice beforehand using some spare wood. If you do a web search for "French polish" you'll find many sites, videos, etc., that explain the process far better than I could.

Hopefully, some of this site's cabinet experts will chime in.
