I have long wanted one of these gramophones (as I am sure many others have!). I have searched eBay in the UK, Germany, and France with no luck. Are these incredibly rare, and where would be a good starting point to attempt to find one?

They are not common, but I would not call them incredibly rare, more like scarce. I found mine in German eBay some years ago, and I have seen three or four more for sale since that time, so I recommend you to keep a search tag on German eBay. The main problem is not finding one, but finding one in good condition, the external painting is fragile and susceptible to scratches and similar damage. It is worth the search, a very interesting machine, with a unique and clever design - the handle also functions as the winding crank, the ON/OFF and the speed control - and a good sound to top.
