Victrola XVI - Spring barrel end cap

Hi All,

I’m having trouble getting the pressed in end cap off of this spring barrel for a Victrola XVI. I’ve tried hitting it with a 2 x 4 club that I made, which has always worked for me on other machines. However, with this particular spring barrel, it’s being very stubborn and just will not come loose. I guess it’s dried grease or something. I put some penetrating all oil on it last night around the rim, but it still won’t come loose. At this point, I’m trying to go in from the backside, but haven’t been able to get in that way as of yet . Any ideas or tricks to get this 1907 end cap off?

Thanks,

John

When blowing up your picture, I believe I see traces of solder around the edges of the cap.

Hi JerryVan,

Great to hear from you. I cleaned it off a little better and there is no solder…. This picture is a little better hopefully.

Have you tried hitting the shaft end, on the opposite end, with a mallet? That usually will pop the cover off.

If you don't have a mallet, then place a piece of wood over the shaft end and use a hammer.
