Columbia Enters the Disc Market

December 10, 1901: Joseph W. Jones was granted a U.S. patent (No.688,739) for “Production of Sound Records.” Young Jones, working in Berliner’s recording laboratory, observed (or surmised) the advantages of recording in wax rather than acid etching, and proceeded to claim the process as his own. This patent opened the door for Columbia to enter the disc market, while putting the new Victor Talking Machine Company in serious jeopardy.
