Todays find!!!

Some friends that own a local antique shop invited me to their home to look at an Amberola 30 that needed some attention. When I walked into their house I immediately saw a Salter record cabinet that currently being used to store books. Several hundred dollar bills later, it was mine and my feet have not touched the ground since. The original individual record shelves were removed. I'm not sure I have enough time to get it ready for Union this year but it will be a fun project. Jerry Blais

Congratulations Jerry. Two Salter cabinets just sold at Stantons a week ago in the $4,000 - $5,0000 range. Both were disc cabinets and complete and with the felt lining and lions head column on front. I'd say you got quite the find there.

Beautiful cabinet, Jerry. Not all Salter cabinets had felt-lined individual record slots, and not all cabinets with those felt-lined slots are Salter, but it seems that most are. Salter made a nice line of cabinets.

As for good deals, my wife - after about 10 years of wedded bliss - made an observation concerning some of my phonograph-related purchases that she has repeated on several occasions. "There's nothing so common as a 'good deal'." Boy, she's a tough cookie - - I can't argue with that! :)

Way to go Jerry. I can always count on you to find a hidden gem. FYI.....I know a man that can make the missing lion feet for you. His work is amazing to say the least and you would never know they were new. I think it would be money well spent. At the very least, you should ask him how much. In my opinion, adding the feet will only add $$$$$$ on the sale of it.

In addition to the missing claw feet, my cabinet is missing the fancy pull in front. Anybody have any ideas for a replacement? Thanks, Jerry

Not sure what the original pull looked like on your cabinet, but here is a link to an antique hardware supplier I happened across:

I don't see any holes for a pull in your pictures. Where was it located on this cabinet?

The pull is also the key escutcheon. The cabinet has been refinished and by looking carefully, you can see where the pull was originally located. Thanks, Jerry

I realized my record cabinet was missing the original door pull when I compared it to an identical cabinet in my basement. I was in a quandry for a replacement. I called a few other collectors but had no luck or good leads. Next, I checked with a fairly local business that specializes in furniture restorations. They had plenty of bin pulls and knobs but suggested that they have a craftsman that casts exact replicas. I was delighted with the exact copy and the $65 price.
