Star record label.

Post by Hoodoo »

Does anyone here know anything about this label? I don’t think it is related to the Hawthorn and Sheble Star label. I cannot find anything on the web.
Notice that the label’s design is not exactly the same on the two sides and the title is written in four languages on one side and three on the other.
The record has the outer and inner raised ridges that can be found on some very early records.
Although it is well scuffed, it plays ok; the low notes of the tuba reproduce quite strongly.
I’m thinking early twentieth century, but from where, I have no clue.

Just my two cents. I think it's a European pressing. Allan Sutton's "American Record Companies And Producers, 1888-1950" mentions a Star label (not H&S) that was produced by International Record Company. However, IRC was only in business from 1904-1907, so my guess would be all of their pressings were single sided. All of the IRC pressings I own (Excelsior, Faultless and Kalamazoo) are all single sided.
It is interesting that not only are the labels not the same, but also each side has it's own catalog number.

According to www.early78s.uk the Star record pictured was produced by Ernest Hesse of Berlin.
In addition to their own Star label they supplied material to other companies including Kalliope and Stella.
The multi-lingual label suggests that records were exported to Britain, Russia and Spain.
