Hello. I've received a strange email from John Sleep, mjsleep at btinternet.com, a well known gramophonic dealer, asking me if I've ever bought from Amazon. No images, only text, and no references to any specific article.
Have any of you received a similar email?
Herein copied as is. Amazon goes with a zero instead of an 'o'.

Best wishes
John

As I bought from him years ago, maybe needles, springs, a soundbox or whatever.. it could be that any hacker has stolen his email contacts and is writing.
But the email has no links or anything dangerous, it's plain text (I believe).. heavens, I hope not too have been hacked only for opening the email. The address is authentic John's... Nothing strange.
I wanted to ask if anyone else has received this, or knows about John, also known as 'The Gramophone Man', if memory serves.

Aside.... Wasn't his website, or letter headings, which had a sympathetic cartoon of him, kind of potato-man much in the style of Alastair Murray cartoon characters?

I read on the Facebook forum that his email was hacked. But your computer is probably ok, Iñigo, the dangerous thing to do is to open attachments. You can do a scan with your antivirus just to be more reassured. As to Sleep's website, I do not remember cartoons, but I never bought anything from him, and last time I checked his site was years ago.

Yes, I received the same email as well. It was identified as 'dangerous' by the email checker so I didn't open it.

Oddly, I emailed John seperately to let him know but I didn't receive a reply.

Maybe he has created a new email address ?

I also received the email. Here are John's contact details as they appear on his website today :

The "Potato Head" cartoon character was the logo of the late Philip Knighton "The Gramophone Man" of Wellington, Somerset.
It was indeed designed by Alastair Murray. Philip was a good and greatly missed friend to both of us.

I received the same emails to two email addresses here, and instantly recognised them as spam. Then a friend here on the TMF emailed me to ask about the same thing. I phoned John (who I'm in touch with every few months) and he has received literally dozens of calls to advise him about the problem! I believe his email is working OK now.

In my case the email didn't have any link nor attachment... The hacker must be only testing something.

Hello,
I have received exactly the same mail some weeks ago. I contacted John Sleep per text, and he said it was a scam. I did not know then that it was an old problem, but apparently it still exists.
