At what point (if any) did record companies stop using cheap shellac that wears bad on machines? is there any comprehensive list of all of the different labels who used dimestore shellac?

I'm thinking of Grey Gull and their affiliated labels.The shellac wasn't great,but you can find some great stuff on it.edisonplayer.

I have noted that some of the wartime (WWII) records, at least those made in Canada, are of inconsistent quality. If one label stands out in my general and non-scientific perception, it would be Columbia. Their laminated records from this period can be quite bad. The culprit in the mix here would probably be recycled shellac from ground up used records purchased in a large wartime buy-back scheme rather than dime store shellac.
