Holed Up in a Cabin

I spent a couple of days holed up in a cabin on remote island during a spring storm. Ferry service was cut off for part of the time.
There was happiness to be found in my 1940s RCA Victor portable and a small box of contemporary records. It is a loud machine even with soft tone needles.

Those RCA portables from the late 30s/1940s sound pretty good, especially if the reproducer has been overhauled with fresh, soft gaskets.

They have a wide exponential horn made of fabric, sealed against the motorboard that sounds very well and warm... A feature that many of the latest acoustic phonographs of the 1940s...

Those RCA portables from the late 30s/1940s sound pretty good, especially if the reproducer has been overhauled with fresh, soft gaskets.
I started collecting in the 70's. I had wonderful mentor collector friends and was influenced by them. Their uniform sentiment was that any internal horn machine was simply a parts donor and even a free portable was not worth walking across the street to investigate. I broke away from their negative feeling about internal horn machines but I've never been interested in portables. Several years ago I was attending the old CAPS show and from across the room I heard the most wonderful hot dance music so I wondered that direction. I was amazed that it was coming from a portable! That dealer had probably a half dozen different portables and he played several and all were impressive. I can't say I have any in my collection mostly because of space limitations. But you'll never hear me say that they can't perform.

Everybody has room for at least one VV-2-55 or an HMV 102...
