Zonophone

“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

April 21, 1899: Louis Valiquet filed for a U.S. patent for “Gramophone Motor.” Beginning in March/April 1900, this would be marketed as the Zonophone, the first successful competitor to Berliner and, for awhile, the only disc talking machine legally available in the U.S.

I'm a big fan too - 1900-01 Zonophone A, B, C, D, and Concert Grand. There's a 1903 Concert up there too, but the earlier National Gramophone Corporation machines are my favorites.
