I am posting this in this forum because I have a friend who just acquired the gramophone seen in the photos. After careful inspection, there are no markings to indicate the manufacturer. I thought it might be a Gilbert, but I am thinking now that it may be a Mellophone. When he opened the unit, he found a tag around the underside of the tone arm that said King Ltd. 42 Coswell Rd. E.C. He is eager to know the make of the unit but, more importantly, there was no reproducer when acquired the unit and he wants to know what kind of reproducer he needs and where he can find it. The L-shaped slot was crudely cut into it to accept an HMV Exhibition, I surmise. Photos and information are below. Can anyone help?

Paillard motor so maybe a duettophone soundbox. Your friend would probably be better off trying different ones until they find one they like. There's quite a few fit that style of fitting.

The speed control doesn't look like the palliard motor I have although my palliard motor is a very basic model.

The speed control is by Paillard. This and the tonearm on my Fullotone Chinoiserie machine are similar to your friend's.
As you say, the tonearm has been modified to accept a bayonet fitting. It was originally a "Continental" push fit.

The plain oak cabinet is basic and unbranded. It could be the work of an amateur, built from a plan in a hobbies magazine. Mechanical components were readily available from wholesalers to complete such home made machines.

There were a lot of small manufacturers around europe who would buy motors and other hardware from a catalogue, and build their own cabinets. In your case this might be by the store that was selling it?
