“On This Day in the History of Recorded Sound…”

August 7, 1883: Born: Reinald Werrenrath, concert and operatic baritone and prolific Victor recording artist.

August 7, 1900: Eldridge Johnson was granted a U.S. patent (No.655,556) for “Sound Recording and Reproducing Machine.” This device was marketed through 1901 as the Berliner/Johnson “Exhibition” sound box.

August 7, 1917: Ralph Mayhew was granted a U.S. Patent (No.1,236,333) for a “Book,” by which ”…the story or song which is printed and illustrated in the book may be heard at the time the text is read, and while the book is open at the cut illustrating the story or song.” These would be widely sold as children’s “Bubble Books.”
