Motor spindle size question…

So I got a VV 1-70 recently, and the motor inside had a “Uncle Bubba” fix to the governor and I had a spare motor that probably came from a Granada machine, so I installed the governor from that motor on the one in the VV 1-70 and surprisingly, it actually worked worse than the homemade governor knocking against the motor board and having speed fluctuations.
So I decided to install the whole other motor in place of the motor that was in the 1-70 (they looked the same at first) it works much better BUT. It sits a little too high on the motor board and the brake doesn’t touch the turntable.
I looked at both motors closely and the motor that was in the 1-70 was a “9” motor and the spare motor I installed has a “17” on it. I know these motors are marked to how many feet the spring size is, but are the spindles different on these too? Or is the motor I installed just out of adjustment?

You can also raise the brake adding a thick felt gasket under the brake platform... a thin wooden piece, thick cardboard or leather, etc

Maybe it's the perspective of the photo, but it appears that your brake is kind of bent and sitting too low. However, if the difference is really in the motor, then swap out the spindle shafts.

There should be rubber or felt washers between the motor and the board. This will lower the turntable.

Andy, or whatever your real name is, I really dislike the pseudonyms in common use but this is not the place to discuss this.
Here is some information that may help. According to the Victor replacement parts listings the Granada spindle is longer than the one used in the 1-70
The governor and brass governor drive gear are the same between the two motors.
Below are the specs.
What I would recommend is that you transfer both the governor and the mating governor drive gear from the Granada to the 1-70 motor. This way you will have the right length spindle and it will cure the brake issue. The governor worm and the brass gear often wear together as a pair, you may need to try a few engagements of the multi-start worm to find the original and quietest setting. Marking the engagement before disassembly is possible but difficult.
The position of the governor set screw spot on the two spindles is different so don’t try to put the 1-70 spindle in the Granada motor.
Notice that the 1-70 spindle is shared with the common VV-IV and the VV-VIII
Yes, the number stamped on the spring barrel is the spring length.

Yep. I swapped spindles and that’s what did it! Break works! I solved my own problem yay!
But as a bonus this motor has 17 foot long springs instead of 9 so that’s an upgrade.
And Amberola Andy came from the Edison Phonograph Monthly as an advertising character to sell cylinders in rural areas, and since that’s my name and I have a Amberola 30 I guess why not?

I’m glad you got it fixed however if you moved the shorter spindle to the Granada motor the governor gear will not align well. In the specs, notice the difference in the length from the drive pin to the governor set screw spot.
My suggestion was to move the governor and drive gear from the Granada motor to the 1-70 motor, not the 1-70 spindle to the Granada motor.
Oh well, if you are happy with the operation it is yours to do with as you wish.
