The one item I have in mind to add to my little collection, perhaps at next year's Orlando phonograph show, is one good example of an Edison disc machine. I have narrowed down my short list to one of the double-spring "Laboratory Standard" models. Would be interested if there are any thoughts about whether earlier or later models are better; for example, a C-250 Chippendale,vs. a C-19 Chippendale.

I would go with the C250 model. I like the drawers with the fancy handles over the record slats in the C19.

I agree with the above, but mechanically, they both play the same. I've had both over the years, and the fact that it was the most popular model means it should never be hard to find parts if needed. Good choice for starters!!

While I think that the drawers are more elegant than the dividers (which replaced the drawers as a cost-cutting measure in the manufacture of the cabinets), the biggest drawback of the dividers is the tendency for the leatherette to come unglued and raise slightly along the back-edge of the dividers where it is largely hidden from view. Since white paper Diamond Disc labels also have a tendency to lift on the perimeter, it is quite easy to snag a lifting label on the lifting leatherette and tear a good portion of the label off. The drawers in C-250's aren't quite as unforgiving!

Also, a LOT of C-19s, C-250s, and W-250s have survived. Condition is a huge factor for these machines since there are so many to from which to choose. While you're waiting for the Orlando Show, you may want to regularly scan Florida Craigslists. I'll bet that there are at least fifty 250-series DD machines on Craigslist all over the country at any given time. Don't over-pay for one either!

What would be a reasonable price for a C 250 or a W 250 in decent condition on the current market?

The C250's have really dropped in price. This is your chance to get one. A mahogany one goes for about $500-600 or more depending on condition. An oak one will go for about 20% more. Don't jump on the first one you see unless it's a screaming deal. Good luck with your hunt.

I'd say that if you look just a little, you'll likely find a decent specimen for $300 or even less.

I agree with John. I got mine (a very late C-19) after being patient for a long time for $140 at an auction. It was cosmetically filthy, but it cleaned up beautifully. They're tanks once you've got them running properly. Good luck!

The previous posts are good estimates. Be sure you check out the phonograph to make sure it plays through an entire record since the way the needle tracks across the disc is not the same as other machines.
