I posted an ad on Craigslist a couple weeks ago stating I am interested in buying phonographs and asked for people to send pictures if they had one they were interested in selling. I was sent pictures of a nice looking VV-8-30X and today I went to pick it up. I know a little about Credenzas and 8-30's but will definitely be reading up on them a bit more in the next few days. This one is in very good condition with almost no blemishes or scratches in the finish and a little wear on the gold hardware. I would rather have a spring motor version, but the motor on this one is very quiet and is a nice change of pace from the normal winding. I need to have the sound box rebuilt and will post a video after I have that done. I have quite a few electrically recorded Victor records and up until now, have never heard one play as this is my first orthophonic phonograph. Here are the pictures:

Looks Fantastic. So clean and shiny it looks like it just came out of the Victor Dealer back in 1926 ! Just curious as to the serial number of this one. I can probably date it for you using the Victor data book. Also did you by chance check out the production date sticker ? It is usually found just under the bottom front of the cabinet.

Thanks! I am lucky to have it in my collection. There is no production sticker that I can see on the bottom. But here is the data plate:

According to the Victor Data book, 14,388 Victor VE 8-30X's were shipped starting in the 4th Quarter of 1926, and ending in 1930 when only 2 were shipped. The highest reported Serial number is 31089. 1926 & 1927 were the best years of 830X sales with 5,104 & 8,962 being shipped respectively.

I am in Columbus myself! Beautiful machine to say the least and I wish I had space for one in my apartment. Alas, I have but a VV 4-7 as my orthophonic companion. Where in the city did you find yours? Mine came from out in Reynoldsburg.

I'll happily trade you a spring-wound version in the equivalent condition (when I find one!)

This one came from Fort Wayne, Indiana. I posted the wanted ad in Dayton as well and was contacted by a person who had 6 phonographs they were wanting to let go of. I didn't have the funds, let alone room for all 6. I told my Father-in-law and he went and bought all of them. I ended up trading him for it and picked it up at his house today. He ended up bringing home my 8-30X, a VV-VI, a mahogany Columbia tabletop, a B-19 "Chalet" Diamond Disc, VV-2-55 Orthophonic portable and another off brand portable.

I am happy he made the trip and made sure to give an even trade for the 8-30X.
