Victor VI thead size

I am restoring a Victor VI and need to touch up the threads on the crank(female) and the shaft(male). My ¼-20 is too coarse and my ¼-28 is too fine. What size tap and die is needed?

Typically, Victor crank threads are ¼ - 24 NS thread specifications. An odd thread by today’s standards but back then, a very common one. Thankfully they’re still fairly easy to obtain. Your local hardware store may not have them but industrial tooling suppliers will help. McMaster-Carr, MSC, Tracy Tools, or places like that.

Spud has correctly identified the thread. A good source for special taps and dies is (believe it or not) Victor Machinery Exchange.

Including ¼-24, here is just a sampling of all the ¼” Special Thread series dies, they have most sizes of these and the matching tap in stock at reasonable prices.
Many other tools are available.

You would not believe the weird threads that are out there! 125 years there were tons of weird spec threads! Henry’s model T is full of oddball threads!

You are welcome! Victor Machinery Exchange has come to the rescue many times!
Just a word of caution. Victor liked to use #14-24 threads often as well. The bolts on the rear panels of Orthophonic machines, the bolts holding the taper tube support on most Victrolas and the magazine base bolts on the 10-50 are some examples. #14 is just slightly smaller than ¼”
Taps are available for these as well.
