The Korean Jazz Band

Post by m_nakamura »

From what I understand Jazz is popular in Korea. I found this photo from the Syncopated Times of the Korean Jazz Band (Yes, that was their name), in 1926.

Most of these recordings are missing or sparsely preserved. I have the "Sorrow of Korea" on an LP, though.

A lot of music was western influenced, unlike pre-war Japanese music. It was produced underground and viewed as a symbol of freedom. Many songs have themes of tragedy and enchainment.

After reading about the history of the band. It makes me really upset and really angry that the whole situation was hidden from me.

I usually don't enjoy pre-war music. Korean records are an exception. It is mostly all of heavy western influence with a taste of Korean trot.
