Dictaphone

Post by Papycoup »

Hi' all...

I was building a machine using "Freecad", for 3D modeling... and I just discovered that on my dictaphone, the rotation of the cylinder is resverse comparing to an Ediphone (?)

Can enybody confirm that ?

>>>> To free the mandrel axis and the feddscrew, I have transfered most for the parts on one Dictaphone machine (I owned 2 wreck machines).
The machine left has a "pot metal" motor whitch is definitely blocked...

Now, I'm planning to build a base to receive the saved parts, with an interchangeable pinion to get correct pitch for cylinders "standard-inter-concert" and "4 minuts"...

So the question I ask you is very important for me.

Many thanks for reading - answering.
Pierre.

I don't claim to be an authority on Dictaphones or Ediphones, but I've never encountered one whose mandrel didn't travel the same direction as a conventional Edison or Columbia machine.

Good luck - -

Mandrel should turn the same way as all phonographs, and that includes the shaving machine. I used to own and operate one.

Many thanks for your answers, but I must add:
The nut fixing the mandrel fits clocwise ( right threaded), and there is two pinions giving the mouvement to the feedscrew...
If running same way as Edison, mandrel pinion will be unscrewed, and feedscrew turns reverse...
What is the good choice ?
(sorry for my poor english)

According to you answers, I investigated more on my machine (I find it too dangerous to put any power in...)

The registering stylus shows that the cylinder turn at the usual way ( conter clockwise, looking on the belt side ).

So, as there are two intermediate pinions giving movement to the lead screw, this one runs on reverse order.

I must be sure of this, building new pinions ( by 3D ) to get correct turning of the lead screw.

Sorry L'm trying to add ths image - no succzss.

I have rebuilt a "Graphophone Pathé" last year, and, starting from this experience, I plan to build a machine for electrically read the cylinders.

You can see my building on You Tube:
