VE-9-40 Victrola/Electrola/Radiola

Just finished the restoration of this 1927 Victor with a lot of help from electronics expert ChuckA. The selling price when new was a whopping $1000. It featured your choice of either mechanical or electrical reproduction through the large Credenza sized Orthophonic wooden horn. Both the Orthophonic Sound Box and the Electric pickup are combined on the single tapertube (tonearm) with the geometry such that both needles contact the record at the same place. The horn occupies the entire right side of the cabinet behind a grille and two doors. The two doors on the left cover the record storage area, the rotatable loop radio antenna is contained behind and under the Superhetrodyne Radiola 28. The radio and amplifier could easily be switched from Electrola to Radiola with a lever next to the radio tuning drums.

I remember seeing a non-working 9-40 in an antique store in Binghamton NY.edisonplayer.

It looks and sounds fantastic. It would be interesting to see a video showing the difference between the acoustic Orthophonic sound box and the amplified electrical pickup playing the same record--perhaps a nice thumping foxtrot. Also, the radio would be interesting to hear, though not much music makes its way to AM radio anymore.
