I was surprised that BLS had been pressed on Apex. Neat little rag tune "Stuttering". As anyone else seen BLS on Apex??.

Apex were Canadian issues. They probably used masters / stampers loaned from Gennett for their issues, not at all uncommon practice.

What APEX series is it on? Most of the Bailey's Lucky Seven recordings were issued on the Canadian Starr Gennett label..., like APEX, one of the numerous labels issued by Herbert Berliner's Compo Company in Lachine Quebec. Herbert is my hero...and avatar... as you all know. "Bailey" was Sam Lanin, and the Seven were the Memphis Five..plus 2 I understand, and of course there are Lanin sides on APEX but they usually called them something else. I couldn't find any Bailey in a cursory scan of Robertson's Apex 8000's discography. But that isn't to say they're not there.

Jim, It is a very low number.

I looked this up in Rust last night and it is indeed an issue pressed from Gennett masters. There were at least a few other BL7 issues also released on Apex.

I may have no memory but my records are organized Went to my 400's section et voila! Didn't even remember I had it!!!
The 300's 400's and 500's are an odd series. The 500's were intended I think as a Canadian series both artists and recordings but there is a lot of American material thrown in. The 300-400's were Gennets but it begs the question as to why one would issue two Gennett series, unless the Starr Co got a bigger cut of one and not the other. Compo is such fun and really needs a book. Twenty years ago I started making notes for a Herbert Berliner/Compo biography-history but I sort of got sidetracked.

Jim, great to see you have a copy. Maybe you or another can answer this question.........what is the or one of the rarest Canadian labels??. I have also thought it to be the Berliner "Imperial" label.
What do you think??. I have only ever found one after all these years. It was in with a small group of regular 7" Berliners. Our national archive have a few. However, I think most are in French. They would like to have this one too. I have never seen a 10" "Imperial" and I know they were pressed.

The Imperials are mega-rare for sure. In all my years I've seen none. Zero. By comparison the 7 inch brown wax are a dime a dozen. Comparatively speaking that is.
I can't think of any other Canadian label of similar scarcity. Even Auroras aren't that rare. Canadian Vitaphone might rank up there, but then the LABEL is rare but the content came from Columbia
Apex Radia-Tone is not common but one does see them too.

Thanks for that Jim. I have many Auroras. I think they were Eaton's house brand. Auroras some a sore spot with me......I was cleaning one titled "Bearcat Mama" and I broke it in half . It was such a great hillbilly song that is now garbage.I was able to put together. Maybe, I will make a You-Tube of it.

While most Bailey's Lucky Seven records were released on Gennett, they were also released on foreign labels using a variety of pseudonyms. I have seen a number of BL7 discs under pseudonym being offered on Ebay by Australian sellers.
