No, the seller is the insane one. That's a $10 disc at best.

An opening bid of 50 cents should be the max in my opinion. And even then he will probably make 49 cents profit. It's one of those 50 in a dozen German military bands and the label isn't pristine either. A no go at anything more than 5 bucks.

Based upon the above valuation, I have offred $1.77 for it, just to get it to a nice round ten bucks. I also asked him what his valuation was based upon. I will let you know if I get an answer. Maybe. he will quote Dock's? John

Well it shows what we know.... "You won't find this record at any garage sale. You won't find this record anywhere else in the world. If you were to do some research you'd know what it's really worth." Alas, he didn't state why it was worth $3,200. John

Well, as somebody who has literally looked through hundreds of thousands of 78s in my lifetime, I can tell you with some authority that this is nothing more than a German studio orchestra playing what was commonly recorded as "highlights" from Tannhauser. Big deal. I have dozens of discs like this, Conway's Band, Pryor's Band, Sousa's Band, Victor Military Band, Creatore's Band, Prince's Band and tons of others recorded these types of medleys (if you can call them that) and they sold very well. I actually find them fun for playing on outside horn machines because they're usually well recorded and a great way to show off a machine's ability, but they're not at all scarce! The only reason I even said $10 at best is he might find somebody interested in the label style more than anything else. It's pretty clear that this seller has his head someplace where the sun doesn't shine.

I e-mailed this guy asking simply what he bases his prices on.
His reply is as follows:

I'm busy running a business so I'm not going to bother wasting my time on this if that's cool. We aren't always spot on with our prices, but we've sold numerous 78's for $1000+ that people like e-mail about how it's a $2 record, so we'll just keep doing our thing.

Shugrecords is obviously very well informed, judging by that friendly email.

Well, if anyone wants to drive to the Goodwill in Albany, NY, I just dumped 3 boxes of acoustics in really nice shape behind the store at their donation center on my lunch hour...let's see 300+/- 78s at $2000 (just being conservative on value ;) ) a piece that's $600,000 I just gave to Goodwill! :P
