The Talking Machine Forum — For All Antique Phonographs & Recordings

At Renninger's Flea Market in Kutztown Pa this weekend, they are having an antique radio show. Has anyone here ever gone to this? Is there usually phonograph stuff (like 78's, cylinders, parts, etc)? Thanks for any help. Here is a link:

I went last Spring and plan to go on this Friday. It's quite interesting. Most phono-related items are from the late 1930's into the sixties, with a small amount of records, mostly WW II years. I saw no cylinders or acoustic disks, aside from some poor-looking Edisons. I still enjoyed it a lot..they have a central low-power broadcasting setup playing music appropriate for the vintage radios, and dealers tune to the station to demonstrate their working units. There seems to be a lot more talking and laughing at this gathering than at a typical phono show..maybe because of the good background music!
Some dealers have modern high-end audio equipment for reasonable prices.
I'm picking up the rebuilt innards of an Edison C2 and dropping off a Philco Superheterodyne 9 for repair.

Thanks for the heads-up. Those of us in the area already know that we dwell in a living museum here in s.e. PA, in more ways than one, and Renninger's is a local institution. I'll try to make it over there this weekend. Looks like good weather, too, for a change. (Wish we could move this rain to Texas, where they need it much more than we do. We're already 20" ahead of our average rainfall on the year.)

The talking and laughing goes with the PA dutch. Bet that you'll hear the dialect over in K'town!

A good place to find phonographs in Pa. is Shupp's Grove in Adamstown. I added a few machines to my collection at Shupp's Grove back in 2009 and 2010, including a near perfect Stewart all metal phonograph. Got it for $50.00 I think. Brian Keith

Ha, that's funny because I go to school at Kutztown University, and the first day I went, I started talking with a Pa Dutch accent (after listening to it for a while, I can use it at will), and they corrected it because it wasn't proper english. It wasn't even in an English class

Follow up: by the time I arrived at Renninger's, before 3 pm Saturday, the radio folks were all packed up and gone, with only a handful of tables still occupied. Big disappointment, but I couldn't get there any earlier that day. Didn't even get out of the car but just drove by the pavilion. Then decided to go inside and check things out, as it had been years since I was last over there. Lots of stuff, most of it of no interest to me. Did see a VV-IV with a $225 tag. Mmmm. No thanks. Some Lionel train stuff but nothing unusual. Lots of old clothing, kitchen gadgets, bric-a-brac, etc., etc. There *is* a very good brew pub in Kutztown, so all will not be lost if you get hungry and thirsty, but as for Renninger's, ho-hum. Just my 2¢ worth.

Sorry, Henry, that you were disappointed. It's too bad you couldn't get there earlier. I'd recommend going up next time for the Friday morning dealer setup. I went on Friday, getting there around 10:30 am, and most of the main pavillion was fully set up, with some extra space taken in the 2nd pavillion. I found a few records and a replacement tuning knob for my Philco Superheterodyne 90 cathedral radio. Most interesting though (to me) was a late-model Canon Powershot digital camera, which I picked up for little $$.

I went Saturday morning around nine. There were a lot of radios, but not much in the way of phonographs. I did happen to get about 25 78's though (would have loved to have found some cylinders though). I also saw a Zenith Shutter dial that if I would have had an extra $100 with me, it would have came home with me. Oh well. I heard many of the sellers talk about how small the crowds were, which is probably why they left.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't have much luck.

I was also looking at the Lionel stuff, but you're right, nothing special. There was a handmade wooden set with Lionel prewar and postwar trucks in the outdoor flea market that was kinda neat though.
