I recently obtained a Pathé "Pathéphone" no. 25. There is no tension and the crank just winds and winds and winds. I was wondering what kind of spring I would need for this and where I might be able to find one.

Neat! The Pathé no. 25 is the first machine I ever fixed. It dates from around 1920 or so. There are several places around the U.S. where you can order a new spring, including Wyatt's Musical Americana (in California), Victrola Repair Service (in Vermont), and Great Lakes Antique Phonograph.

The motor on this is a two spring motor. More than likely, only one of the two springs is bad. There is *probably* not tension on the springs at this point, but it is possible that one of the two spring barrels is hung up, so take the motor apart with caution.

Also, just fyi, on first glance the tonearm and reproducer on your machine don't look like they are original, though it is hard to be sure without seeing the other side of the reproducer.

The tonearm is the earlier design from the teens, as seen on the Pathéphone "25" pictured at the bottom of the page of this post:

The sound box is an aftermarket product for lateral records. One of these is shown above in the same photo.
