Boy, the motorboard area of my Frankentrola VV 2-5 looks identical to the one on the left. Same speed control, needle cup, and turntable. Now I know what it was off of!
Although, using a Edison motor with a Victrola tone arm may be a cardinal sin...

It still surprises me what a great sound the Edison portables are capable of to produce. I wonder how an Edison needle type reproducer would compete to an Orthophonic.

Were the soundboxes on these designed by Edison, or are they a generic soundbox made by Prime Manufacturing, with the Edison name on them?

I don't think Edison had any input into the design of these machines beyond approving the cosmetic details. Aside from the decorations they are the same machines Prime sold as Silvertone through Sears Roebuck, and other dealers. They are well built and have very long metal horns in the case- essentially they're simplified Orthophonic clones.
