I have a minor problem. My Edison is loud when the motor is running. I found that it is caused by the large pulley pictured below. When the machine is running, if I gently press on the pulley, the pulley, shaft, and the gear all move slightly, and the noise stops (yes, the motor keeps running when I do this). Any ideas how to fix it? I can't find a screw to tighten up.



This is an old photo, as I do not have access to a camera at the moment.

Which way are you pushing the pulley?

If you're applying pressure perpendicular to the shaft and the shaft moves, it's likely you have a worn bearing there. The only remedy for that is to ream out the bearing and put a bushing in there.....

I am pushing the pulley, shaft, and the gear to the right. So, it's parallel to the shaft.

What sort of "noise" ?

Is it a scrape / screech, or a rumble / rattle / buzz ?

If it is a scraping / screeching sound, look on the faces of gears for bright-marks that would be a result of the rubbing...

You might be able to use red fibre washers on a shaft to move things laterally and prevent the scraping... better hardware stores have these in the the lovely little section-box assortments usually kept behind the counter.

If the noise is a rumble or similar noise, that is usually cause by a worn bearing and/or bent shaft/pivots...

Also make sure it's not due to some misalignment of the belt tensioner mechanism...

Sorry to hear you've got problems with your machine. I think the previous two posters are on the right track. One other thing you might want to check: I didn't see the motor suspension springs between your motor frame and the bedplate, (which could also account for noise and misalignment of the crank with the case.) It might be that they're there and just not showing in the photo. (Sorry, but the model B I use for comparing is about 1900 miles away just now, so I'm having to rely on my increasingly doubtful memory.) In any case, good luck with your machine. Once they're sorted out, the model B Standard is an excellent player. They were the most popular model of the Standard line.

Thanks for all the help guys. I just remembered that I have a webcam! So, I recorded it onto my webcam (you may have to turn the volume up to hear it). I recorded it with and without a cylinder playing.

Sure sounds like a "scraping" (ringing - jingly noise) to me... like something is just lightly touching the rim of the pulley ?


I'm not terribly familiar with Standards, so I'm not sure what to suggest aside from intense study with a strong light, and see if you can visually indentify the point of unwanted contact...

From what I see, it might be a worn spot on the governor pinion.

Have you tried moving the pulley in on the shaft, so there is less play; or perhaps moving the governor shaft slightly?

When tuning up a Home or Standard, I sometimes find that shafts have too much lateral "play", so whenever it is possible, I will loosen the set screws and readjust the pivot points to take the slop out; not too tight though or the shafts will get into a bind. I have sometimes been able to quiet down a worn and noisy governor by loosening both pivots and shifting the governor laterally a bit, and then of course I have to readjust the speed control screw.

I see your Problem you have a bent shaft that goes to the pully. I have a B Standard also I had to change my shaft that the pully goes on
if you All look very closely you can see the wobbleing on the pully wich means a bent shaft
