I found one! 10" Victor with winged angel on reverse.

A post made here by someone with several Victor 10" records that had a really pretty winged angel & record disc pressed into the reverse. I have wanted one ever since. The reality was that I have never seen one in person and really didn't think I ever would. Last night I stumbled across one on eBay with a "Buy it Now" price of $5.00. I jumped on it immediately and can't wait to get it. Does anyone how common or rare such records might be? I think someone posted that they aren't really any more valuable than others without the design.

The monetary value entirely depends on the recorded artists and the condition. Only a small number of early records demand high prices. Better collect them because you like the music.

The disc you bought was recorded in November 1906 in Milan, Italy by Amelia Codolini, Francesco Cigada and Aristodemo Sillich with Milan Scala chorus, and subsequently issued on several labels: Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd., Zonophone and Victor.

WOW! Thanks for the info! I did indeed buy it for $5 because I think its "pretty' and unusual. I never heard of the artists so I'm sure it's not worth much more than what I paid for it.

Are all the extant Angel backed Victor discs non U.S. recorded?

The record is more curious to me for the fact that the label is black and not red.

Correct, they weren't US recorded, only imported Victor pressed matrces had "angel backs". Lots come to mind: Mauve label Melbas, Tamagnos and the London recorded Tetrazzini issues in at least the first pressing runs had angel backs on them.

Hope this helps,
Sean

The first Harry Lauder records were also issued on GP black labels with the Angel back. I have 3 10" Lauders like that (Tobermory 52008; Killiecrankie 52009; Wearing Kilts 52016)
