I found this in a needle cup mixed with used needles. Does anyone recognize its purpose? Thanks, Jerry

Jerry,
I do recognize it. It's a nickel, probably from the mid 1980's. In today's market it's worth about five cents.

The metal device looks like the cap clip from a fountain pen- Wahl pens used roller clips in the 20'sa, maybe other makes.

Yes estott is right this is an unfortunately broken Wahl rollerball clip used on Wahl Eversharp fountain pens (and pencils) from 1918-1932. Because there's no name on it, it may be a knock-off repair part or from one of their low-end pens. Value in this condition $0.00 (sorry). If not broken about $5-10.
