Credenza on Detroit Metro CL

Post by phonojim »

If anyone is interested, I saw this machine this morning. It is a Credenza, four door with center turntable. I passed on it because I already have an 8-30 and was simply looking to upgrade to something a bit nicer.
The reproducer has potmetal issues, although not bad. The needle bar ball bearings are either missing or way out of place and at least one spider leg has pulled out of the diaphragm but personally I wouldn't be afraid of any of that. The tone arm uses the early style support, so there are no potmetal issues there. The four-spring motor runs well but is noisy and needs lubrication badly. I wound it some and the springs appear good. The grille cloth is there and intact, although dirty. All four bun feet are there and OK, but with a couple of cracks. The back panel, motorboard knobs and screws and the needle cup are all missing. The machine appears to have the original finish but it is flaking in several places and there is a poorly repaired piece of veneer at the rear of the top.
This would be a good candidate for restoration or as your first Credenza if you are looking for one. I hope someone gets it to restore and not to part out. It's too good for that.

I almost went to look at it, but decided I had enough projects to finish. And I hate fixing veneer...
