Ok whats the secret to getting the spring to release from the shaft. Thought i would try my
hand at cleaning the spring without removing it. I have the barrel out and the top off but no
amount of counter twisting will get the spring to release from the center shaft. Thanks

I guess you didn't believe what I said about adding vasoline to the barrel in a DD motor.
Now you've got the lid off, I suppose you can see what I mean about the grease not solidifying to concrete like it does in others?
It's all good though. It's always best to clean & relube the spring properly without taking any short cuts, and if you can remove & replace a DD spring, you can tackle any spring, so it's good experience.

Good morning. Yes, I see what you mean, nasty stuff. Now back to my original question, I have the nasty little spring barrel in my hand and I can lift the top up. For some reason I cannot get the spring off the shaft so I can completely remove the top. I can't believe I'm getting my rear kicked by a spring.

Well I had to admit defeat trying to get the center shaft to release
the spring. The thing is on its way to George Vollema.
