Just stumbled on this machine on ebay, and I have to wonder, what the heck happened to this Victrola? Looks like it was caught in a fire:

I think a fire was definitely the cause.

It was close to a fire. I had an Edison 'Concert' ('Opera') that had been in an attic fire that looked like that. Still ran although the front was charcoal! The stylus had melted out of the stylus bar of the L reproducer.
